QDoes Ritenour have the morning after pill?
AYes, you can get the Emergency Contraception Pill (ECP), which is also known as the "morning after pill," at the Women's Health Department at University Health Services. Call 863-2633.
Q I keep getting yeast infections. Are they serious?
A A healthy woman normally has some yeast growth in the vagina that is usually controlled by "good" bacteria. But sometimes the vaginal environment gets disturbed, and the bacteria can't control the rapidly growing yeast, resulting in a yeast infection.
Many women will at some time develop a yeast infection. The condition is not serious and will not damage the reproductive system, but it can be very uncomfortable and annoying.
Symptoms can include a thick, white discharge, itching, redness and swelling around the opening to the vagina, burning sensation during or after urination, or vaginal burning or discomfort during intercourse.
Vaginal yeast prefers a warm, moist environment. So, some preventive measures include keeping cool -- avoid nylon underpants, pantyhose or tight-fitting pants; immediately remove damp exercise clothing or wet bathing suits; and avoid feminine hygiene sprays, bubble baths and douches.
Getting adequate rest, eating a well-balanced diet and less sugar, and reducing stress also help minimize recurrences. If you are sexually active and need vaginal lubrication during intercourse, be sure to use a water-soluble lubricant.
Do not use oil-based products, such as Vaseline. Anti-fungal medications for yeast infections are now available without a prescription. For more information, check out www.sa.psu.edu/uhs/yeastinfections.htm.
