In its push to end online piracy, the entertainment industry should not forget that peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing promises to have valid educational uses as well, Penn State President Graham Spanier told a congressional panel in Washington, D.C., yesterday.

SPORTS

Turnoveritis has plagued the Penn State men's basketball team and it was lethal last night.

Penn State men's gymnast Chad Buczek always knew he wanted to attend Penn State. He just never thought it would be via the route by which he ended up coming here. After taking recruiting trips all over the country last year, Buczek made one of the toughest decisions of his life. He chose to commit to the University of Massachusetts on a full athletic scholarship because it was the only school that offered him one. At the time, Penn State had one men's gymnastics scholarship available, but it was already offered to someone else.

The No. 2 Penn State ACHA Div. I Icers beat No. 11 Eastern Michigan 8-3 yesterday in Athens, Ohio, in the teams' first game of the ACHA National Tournament.

Responding to safety concerns in the wake of the death of Kevin Dare last year, the sport of pole vaulting has undergone several important changes during the past year in an effort to improve the safety of the competitors.

At most track meets, the running events take center stage and become the crowd's main focus of attention. This Big Ten season has shown that the field portion of track and field deserves just as much attention, and this weekend's Big Ten Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships has the opportunity to feature some of the best field performances in the country.

The men's ultimate frisbee club is set to kick off its spring season this weekend as it travels to Philadelphia to compete in the West Philly Invite.

After the first two weekends were rained out, the first pitches of the Penn State baseball season will be thrown to a freshman.

She has soft hands, a nice outside touch and can put the ball on the floor a little.

Jen Harris never saw anything like it and probably never will again.

With the No. 18 Penn State women's gymnastics team (8-5, 1-0 Big Ten) needing a clutch performance in the floor exercise to secure a victory over Ohio State this past weekend, one gymnast stepped up to the challenge.

Mark Becks has his goal in sight. It is close enough that he can smell it, almost touch it.

The more times a steel blade is thrust into fire the harder it is going to get, and once it is hard enough the imperfections are refined and sharpened in preparation for battle.

ARTS

Local musician Jeff Sabarese has been around long enough to know how tough it is for State College musicians to find a platform to launch careers or even a soapbox to showcase anthems they've been penning and playing in solitude.

Students looking to escape the bitter winter scenery may find some relief in a new photography exhibit featured in the HUB-Robeson Center's Art Alley.

Local band Uncle Traveling Matt likes to have a good time, and, in the process, it rocks harder than granite.

There will be a slightly different soundtrack to the hookah-smoking, tea-tasting and coffee-quaffing that usually goes on at the Tall Shiva Hookah Lounge, 224 W. College Ave., today.

Need to brush up on your communication skills? Learn a lesson or two from the production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof performed by No Refund Theatre (NRT) at 8 p.m. this Saturday in 111 Forum. The show is free, but donations are welcome.

Carmina Burana is for anyone who assumes ballet always means The Nutcracker, medieval poetry always means boredom, and choirs always mean hymns.

Lost in La Mancha is a film about a film that does not exist.

So Chicago is a huge box office hit nominated for 13 Academy Awards. It isn't the first Kander and Ebb musical-turned-movie to earn widespread critical acclaim.

Protest music.

Even if you didn't like the plot behind Titanic, you had to respect the music in it, especially the traditional Irish beats that Jack and Rose danced to in the steerage party scene.

While working on his band's new album, Pat McGee has been doing rock star stuff -- lounging at New York Knicks games, working with a symphony, drinking with Johnny Rzeznik. You know, the usual.

The Acoustic Brew Concert Series announces that the Irish band Patrick Street will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday in the State College Area High School South Auditorium, 650 Westerly Parkway.

Top professionals in ballroom dancing will be offerig lessons to the general public on April 26 and 27 at the Harrisburg Area Community College in Harrisburg.
