Miss Black Penn State pageant is a tradition

Comments like this are exactly why we continue to have the Miss Black Penn State pageant ("Miss Black Penn State pageant not needed," Feb. 26 letter). Often students at Penn State have voiced their feelings about the pageant, stating it's reverse racism, but what about the tradition.

Can anyone tell me why there is truly a need for a pageant of this magnitude? The purpose is empowerment, uplifting of one's culture and identifying ones worth.

The Miss Black Penn State pageant was an event during Black History month displaying the poise, intelligence, elegance and beauty of African-American woman. This pageant was created during a time when black women were not allowed to be included in the different facets of the university, such as Homecoming Court.

Although times have changed, why alter history and tradition? Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate a culture that was once discriminated against. I wonder how many people who say there is not a need for Miss Black Penn State actually attended the program or any black history program.

Although African-American women are allowed to participate in the Miss Penn State pageant, why change the 18-year tradition started by the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. They gave African-American women the opportunity to shine, when everyone else said they could not.

If Penn State did not hold on to its tradition, we wouldn't sing the Alma Mater at graduation, guard the Lion Shrine during Homecoming or even chant "We are Penn State" during sporting events.

Why should one person feel cheated for an outstanding accomplishment? We should all celebrate and maintain the black woman's contributions to her community and the Penn State community.
