Fashion show at Thon sent wrong message
I would like to say that everyone involved in the Interfraternity/Panhellenic Dance Marathon this past weekend has my full respect. With that said, I would like to comment on a specific unnecessary event that took place on Saturday afternoon. As music played, the crowd was "treated" with a Tommy Hilfiger fashion show. The ridiculously skinny young men and women pranced down the runway in bikinis and swim trunks as everyone in Rec Hall, including hundreds of young children, looked on. All of this occurred in an age where 47 percent of fifth- to 12th-grade girls report wanting to lose weight because of magazine pictures. All of this in an age where, by high school, 40 to 60 percent of girls feel overweight and are trying to lose weight (USA Today, July 1998). I don't believe there is any place for a fashion show featuring the "perfect girl" at Thon, an event entirely "for the kids." The DJ announced, "Every year, we [Tommy Hilfiger] will be here." I can only hope this is not the truth, and that those in charge of Thon will consider no longer contributing to one of the largest problems among America's youth. David Protuy
