With several no-shows, Lady Icers get chance to show their stuff at All-Star game

For The Collegian

Sophomore Lady Icer Katie King's brilliant hat trick was the bright spot in a game where the participants on the two teams were picked out of a hat.

The Delaware Valley Collegiate Conference champion Penn State Lady Icers played host to the league's annual All-Star Game Saturday, as the sunflower team defeated the teal team, 3-1.

The game lost a lot of its luster, as two teams decided not to even show for the event. The University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland were expected to send contingents, but were no-shows at the event.

"I was disappointed Penn and Maryland didn't show up, but it gave an opportunity for some other players to get out on the ice," Penn State coach Jeremy Sharpe said.

The game went on as planned. However, with the lack of players from other schools showing up, three from American and six from Drexel, the coaches were forced to split the Lady Icers and distribute them among two teams.

The format of the game had all the Drexel players and five Lady Icers on the "sunflower" team, coached by Sharpe. The remaining eight Lady Icers and the three American players made up the teal team coached by American University's Matthew Dumpert and Bryan Benenati.

A game full of Lady Icers was dominated fully by the Lady Icers. Penn State was responsible for all of the scoring and penalties in the game.

King opened up the scoring 7:51 into the first, beating Penn State goalie Tara Wheeler. She then followed up four minutes later on her second goal of the game. Lauren Shaw assisted on both of the first two goals.

"Sometimes you just put the puck on net," King said, "and you just get lucky."

King got the hat trick on an unassisted breakaway 14:17 into the third period, beating Wheeler top shelf.

"Great shot, the shot was beautiful, great placement," Sharpe said. "Kate just made her look dumb, she schooled her."

The lone goal for the teal team was scored by Penn State senior Kate Specchio 2:59 into the third period, with Alex McVicker assisting.

The lone penalty was a high-sticking call in the first period against Penn State sophomore Kristen Reed for the sunflower team.

Penn State goalie Tara Wheeler made 18 saves for the teal squad, while Drexel goalie Allison Parker netted 17 saves and the win for the sunflower side.

The game had the feeling of an all-star game as the women, especially Penn State, had a fun time in the exhibition.

"I had an amazing amount of fun," Lady Icers senior Lauren Shaw said.

At the end of the game, Shaw and King entertained the crowd when both dropped gloves and went after each other in a mock fight.

"We fight every single year either at the Blue White game or at an all-star game," Shaw said. "She's never got the jersey over my head, and she finally did it in my senior year, in her last chance."
