Policy was grossly misapplied to protesters (3)
So, people that are peacefully expressing their opinion that a war is unnecessary, a right that is provided to them by the Constitution, are now considered anti-American bigots? What is this writer thinking? It is distinctly American to protest. The spirit of democracy begs that citizens express their views. How will those with mixed feelings make decisions when only one side of an argument is allowed to be heard? The recent day of protest against a war with Iraq was the largest in the history of the world. Let us examine the ineptitude of the arguments in this letter. First, let's pretend you are Graham Spanier. You would probably eliminate the protesting on this campus. That is a violation of university policy according to your argument. You would be, motivated by intolerance toward a group based on political belief. Peaceful demonstrations do not violate anything. Second, I am appalled that the author used Malcolm X to justify his position. The bigots Malcolm X was referring to are people of intolerance, like you. How dare the author use his name this way. You are what makes many of the world's citizens disgusted with America. We claim to be peace-keeping democracy advocates, but our own country is riddled with intellectual totalitarianism. Stop watching Fox News, and read a book (preferably some Chomsky). Maybe you'll learn something. Thomas W. Smee
