'Real World,' 'Road Rules' plays role in cancer-fighting

Collegian Staff Writer

The most recent challenge for some cast members of MTV's The Real World and Road Rules was the fight against cancer.

Blair Herter, Sophia Pasquis, Kendal Sheppard and Malik Cooper stopped in State College for this weekend's Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

The cast members were a part of the Tommy Hilfiger fashion show on Saturday and Family Feud games throughout the weekend, said Wendy Steinberg, public relations captain and celebrity liaison.

Herter, who was the "ladies' man" from Road Rules 10: The Quest, was a part of Thon last year and said the experience was incredible.

"I can't even describe it. It's something you want to be a part of," Herter said. "[Thon] was very profound. I didn't know how to explain it when I got home."

The MTV cast member said the families were what was really important during his visits to Thon. "My favorite thing is to meet the families," Herter said. "I really like to walk around and get each personal story."

After talking with Herter, Sheppard, a Road Rules 11: The Campus Crawl cast member, decided Thon was something she had to try. "There's a lot going on in the world, and all of these people came out here to dedicate their weekend -- that says a lot," Sheppard said.

The fact that students are dancing and dedicating their whole weekend says something about them and what they are fighting for, Sheppard said.

Cooper, from the Real World 10: Back to New York, assisted Sheppard with Family Feud on Saturday morning. "Malik and I got picked up at 5:30," said Sheppard. "We were just trying to get the energy to get everyone pumped up."

The cast members helped to boost morale while walking around greeting dancers and families throughout the weekend. Pasquis, also from Road Rules 10, said she thinks the students in Thon are doing a great thing.

"In a time like this with threats of war and violence they are dancing for cancer," Pasquis said. "I think that's cool."

Dancers and families alike hounded the celebrities for photographs and autographs, each curious about the projects they have been working on.

"I was like whoa, people from MTV," said Mike Kennedy (junior-finance), who modeled with the cast members during the fashion show. "The college kids get into the hype [of the celebrities being there], so obviously people like it. They are just like us but a little older."
