Wrestling team obliterates Lock Haven Bald Eagles

Dominance

The Nittany Lions went into last night's match needing a win.

They got that win in a dominant fashion.

The Penn State wrestling team (11-8) jumped in front of Lock Haven early and obliterated the Bald Eagles for 41-3 win.

The Lions fought for three pins, many bonus points and a few milestones while they won nine of 10 matches.

The Rec Hall crowd of 2,282 watched three Lions pin their Lock Haven opponents. Two other Lions won by major decision and another won by default.

The night started off with Smith's 15-7 major decision over Jim Collins.

Josh Moore went into his match one win shy of having three straight 30-win seasons and four points away from joining brother Scott Moore and fellow teammates Mark Becks, Pat Cummins with at least 50 points on the season.

Moore's pin of Justin Owens, just under two minutes into their bout, assured him of the milestones.

Scott Moore was winning his 141-pound match 13-1 when he was awarded his victory by default.

Penn State's lead opened to 19-0 when freshman Nate Galloway beat James LaVelle 3-2.

Senior Nate Wachter, in his last career dual-meet match, pinned Matt Marquart 4:01 into his match. The pin was Wachter's first fall of the season.

"I'm a winner not a pinner," Wachter said.

Senior Doc Vecchio followed Wachter with a 7-2 victory over Jason Gilligan.

Senior Adam Shepler, wrestling at 174 for injured Dan Waters, took the mat for his final time as a Nittany Lion.

Going into the match Shepler had zero dual meet wins under his belt for his Penn State career.

Shepler, who walked onto the team, walked off the mat a 6-2 winner.

Shepler enjoyed his moment in the sun.

"It felt great," Shepler said. "Once that final whistle blew and I just looked up and saw everyone cheering.

Becks match provided another milestone for Penn State.

Becks 18-6 major decision over Mike Greenberg gave the senior co-captain his 100th career win.

Senior Ryan Cummins lost to Morgan Horner 7-6. Cummins fell behind early, but could not get enough points while Horner evaded him.

At one point, Cummins appeared to have taken Horner down.

"You know Ryan deserved to win the match," wrestling coach Troy Sunderland said of Cummins match. "That's frustrating for him, obviously."

The night ended the way it started- with Penn State on top.

Pat Cummins pinned Tim Meyers 4:52 seconds into his match.

Winning 41-3 felt good after losing so many close matches to top ten teams.
