Late scoring saves Lions

Collegian Staff Writer

The 1999-2000 Northwestern men's basketball team can pop the corks and drink the champagne, because the last winless team won, and it will keep its mark of 0-16 intact.

Trailing by eight points with 1:42 remaining, the Nittany Lions (6-16, 1-10 Big Ten) scored the final nine points to upset Wisconsin (18-6, 8-4), 58-57, last night at the Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State was able to overcome an eight-minute drought in the second half to get the victory.

Sharif Chambliss sparked the run as he buried back-to-back three-pointers in the final minute and a half. Down by two points, Wisconsin's Devin Harris sliced through the Lions' 1-2-2 zone, but his jumper fell short. Jan Jagla had one of his best games of the season scoring 14 points, grabbing the most important of his eight rebounds and throwing an outlet pass to DeForrest Riley. Riley caught the ball, went strong to the rim, made the lay up and was fouled by Kirk Penney with nine seconds remaining. Riley calmly made the free throw giving them the one-point lead. Penney heaved up a desperation shot in-between Jagla and Robert Summers that fell a few feet short of the rim. Mike Wilkinson grabbed it and put the ball in the hoop, but it came after the horn sounded.

Penn State's Jan Jagla and Brandon Cameron block Wisconsin's Kirk Penney's shot and struggle for the ball.

Penney struggled from the field all game long, as he shot 4-for-14 from the field and 2-for-10 from downtown.

"He finishes against Ohio State and we love him," Wisconsin men's basketball coach Bo Ryan said. "He doesn't finish tonight and we still love him."

Devin Harris said that the end of the game was reminiscent to the game last season at the Jordan Center, when the Lions won in similarly.

"The way we lost [is disappointing]," Harris said. "It was just like last year, and that means we're not learning anything."

When the horn sounded the students charged the court to celebrate the first conference victory with the Lions.

"I'm going to sleep," Brandon Watkins said. "I'm too old to celebrate."
