Wrestlers finish off season

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State wrestling team's regular season schedule will come to an end today.

After losing their previous two matches to No. 10 Michigan State and No. 7 Michigan, the Nittany Lions would like to head into the post season on a winning note. If the No. 14 Lions cannot beat Lock Haven in Rec Hall tonight at 7 they will finish the regular season with a five-match losing streak.

"[A win] is real big," Nittany Lion senior Ryan Cummins said. "It kind of catapults us into the Big Ten tournament."

The Lions will finally get a break from top-ten competition. Five of the team's last six matches have been against teams ranked in the top ten.

The Lions have dropped all five matches they have had against top-ten opponents.

Sophomore Dan Waters (6-9) is questionable for tonight's match. Waters injured his leg in last Saturday's match against Michigan.

Senior Doc Vecchio (22-14) had to take his place in the 174-pound bracket the following night.

Vecchio will be able to wrestle in his normal 165-pound class.

Penn State coach Troy Sunderland said freshmen Brian Cantalupi (4-12) or Adam Shepler (6-4) will wrestle in the 174-pound class if Waters is not available.

The match will be the last home event for the Nittany Lion seniors.

Nate Wachter (9-5), Vecchio, Ryan Cummins (20-16) and Mark Becks (35-3) will hit the mat for the final time at Rec Hall.

One of those seniors can attain some milestones with wins tonight

Becks will be entering his match against Lock Haven with a chance for his 100th career win.

Becks is not concentrating on the numbers, though.

"It's not something I'm concentrating on," he said. "I'm really focused on the Big Ten tournament and National Championships."

Freshman Nathan Galloway will wrestle at 149 pounds. After struggling in recent weeks, Galloway pinned No. 15 Ryan Churella (Michigan) 25 seconds into their bout.

"That was big for my confidence," Galloway said. "Knowing I can do that, I can beat any guy in the country."

A win for the Lions tonight will help their confidence as well. The team's confidence will be very important going into the Big Ten tournament.
