Saddam not the threat he is made out to be

Warmongers have been giving some reasons why the United States should go to war with Iraq. The first is Saddam's supposed ties to al-Qaida. This is an incredibly ludicrous argument. Osama bin Laden detests Saddam's government and in fact, in his latest audio tape, called the Ba'ath leadership "infidels." Saddam has crushed Muslim extremism throughout his dictatorship. Bin Laden expressed solidarity with the Iraqi people, but not their leader and he spouts the same virulent rhetoric against other Arab leaders.

Al-Qaida members have been given safe refuge in Iraq, but in the northern Kurdish-controlled areas. And these are the same people (Kurds) that the U.S. administration is currently holding talks with to replace Saddam after the war. Seems like the lessons from the mujahideen campaigns decades ago in Afghanistan have not yet been learned. There's also the insane comparison of Saddam to Stalin and Hitler. While all three are/were monsters, Saddam is different from the other two, since he doesn't command a military anywhere near the capabilities of Nazi Germany or that of Stalin's.

This man can't even control his own country far less to conquer and cause mayhem in others. Also, while Iraqis do suffer, their misery pales in comparison to those in Zimbabwe and North Korea. Millions starve in Zimbabwe because of the policies of Mugabe and conservative estimates attribute about a million deaths to the Kim Jong II regime in North Korea. Treading on the path of war with Iraq will only lead to mayhem and destruction.
