Snow squelches canning trips

Collegian Staff Writer

Blizzard-like conditions in the Northeast left some students on canning trips for Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon stranded or facing hazardous driving conditions.

"Some groups are stuck in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh maybe until Tuesday," said Bill Rubin, Alpha Tau Omega Thon chair.

"I think almost every trip had to come back early."

It was the last canning weekend before this weekend's Thon.

Melissa Machover (freshman-communications) experienced difficulty on her return trip from Pittsburgh.

More than 13 inches of snow fell in the Pittsburgh area, causing dangerous driving conditions for some canners.

Machover woke up early Sunday morning to discover the roadways covered in snow, and her canning group decided to leave about an hour later.

"It took probably 20 minutes to get out of the development we were in," Machover said.

Millions of people across Pennsylvania spent yesterday morning dealing with a massive snowstorm that buried some areas under more than 2 feet of snow.

A few areas of Maryland had more than 25 inches of snow, the National Weather Service said. Some out-of-state canners ended their trips to return to Penn State Sunday.

"We were watching the forecast," said Victoria Rodriguez (junior-psychology and sociology). "We decided to leave early. It was either leave or stay for who knows how long."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
