Pair of baseball games canceled due to weather

The Penn State baseball team's first series of the season, scheduled for this past weekend was canceled due to inclement weather.

The Nittany Lions were to open their 2003 baseball season in a two-game series against the Charlotte 49ers in Charlotte, N.C. The two teams decided to cancel based on forecasts of heavy rain for the area and the winter storm warning for State College that would have made travel exceedingly difficult. The series will not be rescheduled.

Originally scheduled for Saturday and yesterday, the start of the two-game series was pushed back to a yesterday-today start in the face of a 90 percent chance of rain.

Penn State junior Clayton Hamilton, who finished last season with a 2-8 record and 6.48 earned run average, was scheduled to pitch the first game. His opponent was to be Charlotte sophomore Matt Landphair (0-1), who surrendered four earned runs in 4.2 innings in a 12-8 loss against Gardner-Webb.

The Lions are scheduled to open their season next weekend in Charlottesville, Va., where they will take on the Virginia Cavaliers (0-2) in a double-header next Saturday.
