Men's tennis has good show against Bloomsburg

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State men's tennis team put on a good show for the home crowd Saturday, as the Nittany Lions beat Bloomsburg University, 7-0.

Penn State started the day by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. All of the games were won by a score of 8-2.

"We played well," Clint Kaithley said. "It's the first one Roddy [Cantey] and I won this year. We were really happy with how it went"

After securing the doubles match point Penn State needed to win only 3 singles matches to ensure victory.

They did better by winning all their singles matches.

All six of the singles matches were won in two sets. Three freshmen led the way for the Lions in those matches. No. 1 singles Nate Emge had some early problems with his serve in the first set, but the didn't hinder his performance in the rest of the match, winning 6-2, 6-2.

"I started out slow, my opponent [Kris Shumway] came out well. I wore him down at the end of the match," Nate Emge said.

Freshman Mark Barry improved his overall record in dual matches to 5-0 by beating Mike McGrath. Freshman Malcolm Scatliffe won 6-3, 6-2, improving to 2-1 in dual matches this year.

Senior Matt Frakes and junior Roddy Cantey also won in singles action.

"We played outstanding today, Penn State men's tennis coach Jan Bortner said. "We came out and dictated from the beginning and got some good aggressive offensive points."

Penn State is 2-1 this spring adding to their overall record of 4-2. They did some off-season conditioning throughout December and January, including some weight training.

"Roddy is showing a lot of progress, not only in singles but as well in doubles, he continues to get better every week," Bortner said. "The team came out today and did what we were working on in practice."
