Women impressive in final home meet

With its final meet on home turf this weekend, the Penn State women's indoor track team turned in some impressive farewell performances and a second-place finish at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup at the Multi-Sport Complex.

The Nittany Lions (122 team points) finished behind defending Big Ten champion Michigan (172). Despite losing to the Wolverines, the Lions bested conference rival Ohio State (85) as well as West Virginia (77.5) and Pittsburgh (68) in the 10-team competition.

"I thought we had a tremendous weekend and we looked good," Penn State women's track and field coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "Across the board we really showed significant improvements compared to earlier this season and last year ... we're just a much better team."

Junior Chi Chi Aduba set a Penn State women's record in the triple jump with a mark of 43-3 1/4. Aduba's jump was enough to automatically qualify her for the NCAA indoor championships, the first automatic mark earned this season. However, it was not enough to earn her first place, which went to Pittsburgh's Melanie Carter after the two battled it out for top honors. Carter won the event with a jump of 44-00 1/2.

"Chi Chi Aduba's performance was just rockin' the house," Alford-Sullivan said.

Aduba's record-breaking performance was impressive in that it came in the fourth event that she competed in.

On Friday, Aduba won the long jump with a leap of 20-07, a provisionally qualifying mark that was just one inch off another Penn State record.

In addition to Aduba's accomplishments, junior Connie Moore continued her domination of the sprinting events this season by taking first place in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. Her winning time of 23.62 in the 200-meter hit a provisional mark for the NCAA championships and was also her season best.

The seniors took center stage Friday night to accept recognition and awards. Many turned in memorable performances in their final collegiate home meets. After much anticipation, Laurie Fox ran a personal best of 56.95 in the 400-meter dash, placing second in her heat and seventh overall.

"For Fox to run her lifetime best in her last meet on her home track ... it's just incredible," Penn State assistant track and field coach Jeff McAuley said. "She's true-and-true a Nittany Lion."

Fellow senior Deshaya Williams was another Lion who threw a provisionally qualifying mark of 50-11 in the shot put and took third.

The Lions will have this weekend off as they prepare for the Big Ten Indoor Championships on March 1-2 in Bloomington, Ind.

The coaching staff is looking to have two weeks to train for the final seasonal destination, an event Penn State looks to do well in.

"We are going to go into a training routine of a little higher emphasis in practice," Alford-Sullivan said. "My goal for this year is to put in place a championship atmosphere with the team."
