Women not required to register for draft
Re: "Women, 18-year-olds to be called in draft," Feb. 10 letter. While it is true that the draft has not been reinstated, and has not even been brought before Congress yet, there is still a lot of misleading in the information provided. Under the current "draft" or Selective Service Act, males, when they turn the age of 18, are required to register for it. Currently, the first people to get drafted would be people from the age of 20 to 22. Eighteen- and 19-year-olds would not be drafted. While in most aspects of society women have achieved equal rights, there is still bias in the military. Women could not be drafted currently, because first off, they are not required to register for the draft. Second, military rules prevent putting women in combat roles (with the exception of fighter pilots). So while women would be part of the military, they would help in other roles. Their call to arms would be to volunteer, because they will not be drafted under the current system. Nick McGann
