Players cancels under-21 nights

Collegian Staff Writer

Players Nite Club, 112 W. College Ave., has cancelled its Tuesday 18-and-over night, and people under 21 now have one less place to party.

The club's new schedule went into effect last night.

While bouncers stood by to answer questions, a sign on the door notified would-be dancers that the regular Tuesday night event has ended indefinitely in reaction to a change in state liquor law.

The regular event draws young people from as far away as Williamsport.

Previously, clubs such as Players could host underage nights as long as there was one chaperone over age 25 for every 50 people under legal drinking age. The new law changes that ratio to one chaperone per five underage patrons.

The law applies to any club or establishment with a liquor license, even if alcohol is not served on a given night.

Despite notification of the cancellation on local radio stations and newspapers, about 20 people still came to Players last night only to be turned away.

"We travel an hour and a half for this," said a frustrated Josh Bower, 20, of Williamsport.

A Players bouncer waits to turn people away. A sign posted in the window last night stated the club will no longer be open Tuesdays for 18-and-over-night due to a new state Liquor Control Board law.

Many questioned the legitimacy of the new law.

"The Crowbar I can understand," said State College resident Erica Humphrey, 19. "But Players on 18-and-over night, there's no alcohol."

Without a place to dance, Humphrey said she will probably just go over to a friends house on Tuesday nights.

Bouncers could only explain the new law and offer their sympathy.

"The closest place is probably Philly or something," said Doug Sheffer, 20, who drove from Port Matilda to go out.

"I think there's maybe a club in Johnstown," he said.

Troy Winner, 20, of Williamsport, said he frequents Players on Tuesday nights -- but now will not be able to.

Now he and his friends will have to find other options for entertainment, he said.

"Underage people are going to go to parties and they're going to get [arrested]," he said.

Players' regular schedule for people 21 and over will resume Thursday.

Hotel State College, the company that owns Players, declined to comment until Thursday.
