Letter to the Editor
Women, 18-year-olds to be called in draft

Re: "Draft is discriminatory against men, students," Feb. 4 letter.

I am confused as to where the author is getting his information from about this matter. First of all, the draft hasn't even been brought to Congress yet, so if or when there is a draft, it will not be for some time. Second, women will be drafted in the next call to arms. The women's movement has given us the opportunity to achieve equal status as men. This war is a chance to fight alongside men to be seen as Americans, not women. Also, the majority of people who will be drafted will be 18-year-olds who will just be graduating high school. After their service, they will have the opportunity to go to college if they so desire.

The author is correct in saying that the draft in its current form should not be used. But please, investigate before jumping to conclusions about such pressing matters. I have investigated my facts and, as a daughter of a colonel in the United States Army, I too would proudly fight for my country if called.
