Jury to be chosen in child welfare case

Jury selection begins today in the trial of Penn State student Amanda Guzman (graduate-sociology), who is charged with endangering the welfare of a child after allegedly leaving her 18-month-old child home alone.

CORRECTION: Amanda Guzman (graduate-sociology), who is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, allegedly left the child, who was 2 years old at the time, with sorority members who then left the child alone. Guzman allegedly dropped off several friends before returning home. She lived at 1400 Martin St. at the time, according to the Ferguson Township Department report.

Guzman, 23, of 522 E. College Ave., is alleged to have left her child alone in the early hours of Nov. 10 while she attended a party.

Ferguson Township Police said Guzman left her child in the care of sorority members and went to the party.

The sorority members later showed up at the party and Guzman asked the women if they had locked the door to the apartment.

The child was found by a neighbor at about 3 a.m. Police were notified and one of Guzman's friends called to tell her that an officer had the child and she should return home immediately.

Guzman dropped off several friends at different locations before returning home to pick up her child.

Neither Guzman nor her public defender, Sean McGraw, could not be reached for comment.
