'Morning after pill' different from abortion
Re: "Pro-lifers are not against women or choice," Jan. 28 letter. I would first like to address her statement about emergency contraception, or the "morning-after pill." These medications are not the same as having a medical abortion. This drug is called either RU-486, the "abortion pill," mifepristone, or Mifeprex. Taken in pill form, mifepristone blocks the action of progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain pregnancy. Emergency contraception or "EC" is often confused with mifepristone, but it does not cause an abortion, and it will not harm or affect a pregnancy that is already established. It is simply another option for women and actually prevents the need for abortion. I would also like to point out that being pro-life and pro-choice are not mutually exclusive. One can be personally opposed to abortion but still be pro-choice, which means giving women the freedom to decide for themselves. We need to start constructive dialogue. Pro-choice advocates are "pro-life" too. We are not pro-abortion. Jennifer Elliott
