IFC shouldn't reinstate embarrassing fraternity

At this coming Monday's Interfraternity Council (IFC) President's' Council, newly elected member-presidents will vote on whether or not to reinstate Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity into the IFC. Last year, this fraternity was removed from the council as a result of alleged misappropriation of Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon funds as well as several other violations of IFC law.

The fact of the matter remains, as it has since these infractions first came to light, that this organization has shown little if any remorse for these violations. They have not been apologetic to the other member-fraternities for the terrible press this situation caused for all of us during the crucial recruitment weeks of the fall semester.

Instead of issuing an apology, they have tried to tout their previous Thon totals (the money that wasn't allegedly misallocated) as a measure of their self-worth to the Penn State greek community.

In an age when it is difficult enough to convince many students of the great opportunities fraternity life presents, this organization soiled all of our names in a desperate and pathetic attempt to wiggle out of the punishment they rightly received. It is my hope that the council's voting members recall the problems and embarrassment that Sigma Alpha Epsilon caused the council and Penn State greek life. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are one of only a few IFC's left that is self-governing, but with self-governance must come the responsibility and where-with-all to deny membership to this unapologetic and embarrassing fraternity.
