Lion wrestlers harness confidence from wins for Ohio State, Iowa matches

Collegian Staff Writer

The Nittany Lion wrestlers are on roll, but they are going to have to put in some major work this weekend if they want keep rolling along.

The Penn State wrestling team will take on the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes tonight at 7 and the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes Sunday afternoon at 1. Both matches will be at Rec Hall.

After the Lions' strong showing the last two weekends, the team is confident that it can pull off the upsets this week.

Tonight it will concentrate on Ohio State.

"Each match is a little different," Penn State wrestling coach Troy Sunderland said.

"Overall, we competed well against a top team [last weekend against Minnesota]."

He said confidence carrying over from last weekend would help the team.

"Our kids have to be on the ball," Sunderland said.

"The confidence that the kids have is really going to show."

The Lions will enter the match already ensured of their first winning season in three years.

The No. 15 Lions are on a roll.

They have won three of their last four matches, beating Indiana, No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 19 Purdue and losing to No. 4 Minnesota by a mere four points.

The Buckeyes (9-4, 1-1 Big Ten) are led by Keaton Anderson, John Clark and Tommy Rowlands.

Rowlands, No. 2, will wrestle No. 11 Penn State junior Pat Cummins.

The last time they met, Rowlands won by one point.

Cummins is in the middle of a stretch where he will face six top 20 heavyweights in four weeks.

He said the intensity of the matches would help him towards the end of the season.

"This is what I expect in the national tournament," Cummins said. "I think it's good for me."

While the 184-pound match between Lions senior Mark Becks, No. 3, and Iowa's Jessman Smith on Sunday will be Becks' premier match of the season, Becks is concerned with tonight's match. Becks will be taking on Ohio State's Casey Kapustka during that match. Becks said he knows his team is going to need him tonight.

"I'm going to focus on the task at hand," he said. "Ohio State has ten solid guys."

Lions senior Doc Vecchio, No. 14, will grapple with No. 4 John Clark, while No. 1 Keaton Anderson will take on Penn State's Nate Wachter in the 157-pound bout.

A win in tonight's battle with Ohio State could put a little swagger in the Lions' step, but the team is not short on confidence going into the match.

"Last week's solid performance," Becks said. "Shows the fact that we are one of the elite teams in the country. We're back. We've got the talent and we're going places."
