Recycling noisy because residents do not sort
This letter is in response to the students speaking of the recycling noise in the morning, most prominent on West College Avenue ("Recycling vehicles interrupt mornings," Feb. 5 article). I live on the 600 block of West College, and I too have heard that usual breaking of glass during the early hours of the morning. I don't blame the Centre County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA) though, it's just doing its job. I would blame the residents of this area for their poor recycling abilities. On any given day, you can look over at the recycling cans behind my building and see mostly beer bottles everywhere, in every can, on top of the cans, around the cans and even in boxes near the cans. And while its great that students make an attempt to recycle, this, in my opinion is the cause of the noise. The CCSWA has to sort these things out of the other cans when they empty them. So the individual clanking you hear seems to be those bottles being sorted. Having been up early enough to see this process in action once or twice, I can verify that if a can is properly sorted, they just put it on the lifting arm and dump it in one quick, loud process. This is much more pleasant than 100 separate, loud processes. It might not be the perfect solution, but I bet it would make CCSWA's job a lot faster, and perhaps quieter if some students would take the time to place glass and other recyclables in the proper cans.
