Young fighters aid in boxing's win over Mansfield

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State men's boxing team visited Mansfield Saturday, and came away victorious thanks to the young guns. The team took three out of the four bouts, with three boxers fighting for the first time ever.

In the 145-pound division, Penn State's Ryan Manning won in a decision over Mansfield's Mike Ross. Penn State's Ryan Kracow won in a decision over Brandon Cruz for the 175-pound division. Joe Smith won in a decision over Mansfield's Marice Whiteside in the 147-pound division, and Jude Leriche lost in a decision to Luke Stranerie in the 185-pound division.

With Manning the only experienced boxer competing, Penn State boxing coach Bill Wrable was interested to see how his younger fighters would perform.

"I was happy to see the young guys stay under control," Wrable said.

"[Mansfield is] a very aggressive, and strong team. There's a lot of potential with this team. We just need experience, and it all comes down to who is going to put in that extra effort that will take us to that next level."

Manning had a few words to say about the rookies.

"They have really picked things up quickly, and are working hard, they just need more experience," Manning said. "We know what we need to work on to improve for the future."

First-time fighter Kracow said: "I thought [the new guys] performed well, we need to work on a lot of things, but we are getting better every day."

The team will have a hard week of practice for Saturday, when some members will travel to Navy in Annapolis, Md., and others will compete in Reno, Nev.
