Placement of stories questionable yesterday
Whoa. Yeah, that's how Joey Lawrence might have reacted to see that the Olsen twins are getting front page coverage on the Collegian whereas a suicide on our own campus has a subtle, more powerful approach in the "News in Brief" section on page two. Well, I guess this is what the Collegian is going for: coverage of hoaxes containing 16-year-old Wal-Mart spokeswomen whereas the death of a peer is relatively unimportant. I can see no other explanation. I'm not sure what the strategy is with this article (or for that matter the majority of the content in the Collegian) but it seems that a suicide on our college campus might elicit the less than meager coverage it received. For everyone that missed yesterday's issue of the Collegian, I will give you a rundown. Page one: Child porn found on student's computer, Olsen Twin hoax debauchery, people improving their bodies (superficial coverage?, perhaps), and not filling the air with smoke in restaurants Tucked away on page two: Penn State employee commits suicide in lab; page seven: Plant explosion kills eight, and page five: Vandalism on campus. It seems that covering such extraneous topics is an insult to those more relevant stories with more societal implications than the Olsen twins supposedly attending PSU. I think it's great that people want to improve the way they look or the humorous nature of the Olsen twins claiming PSU as their alma mater, but it seems to me that the Collegian needs to tackle more important, serious issues rather than those that will be forgotten in the dribble of tomorrow's edition. It's a delicate balance, but perhaps the next issue will cover "Olsen Twins in buff: Found illegally on college newspaper's computer." What will the Daily Collegian write about that? John Murphy
