Letter to the Editor
Crowd at Lee speech was inconsiderate

When I hiked to the HUB-Robeson Center for tickets to see Spike Lee speak here at Penn State, I was getting ready for a cultural experience as well as an entertaining evening from a renowned director and film maker. Mr. Lee's opinions and the stories of his life he shared with the audience were a very nice depiction of his view of the entertainment world, sports world and racial relations.

Unfortunately, this wonderful evening was tainted by a few very rude audience members. I did not go to Mr. Lee's lecture to get the feeling from the audience around me that I was at a rally by Reverend Sharpton, and the outcries from some of the audience members were uncalled for.

To hear Mr. Lee voice his opinion only to have it followed by cries of "tell the truth" and "oh yes" and "mmmm hmmm," like the vocal annoyances of a daytime talk show, was disturbing to say the least.

To those members of the audience that could not keep their mouths shut for a meager 45 minutes, I must say that you were extremely disrespectful to a revered figure.

I hope you understand that other members of the audience who were sitting attentively and respectfully listening were annoyed each time you opened your mouth and interrupted with your unnecessary cries of agreement.

Next time, wait in line at the microphones after the speech and commend the speaker formally instead of acting out like a 2-year-old.
