Child porn found on student's computer

Penn State Police Services confirmed that an arrest is imminent for a Penn State student under investigation for allegedly using his university account to download child pornography.

Officer Robert Jeter confirmed a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report that said the computer of the 19-year-old Patton Township resident was confiscated Monday and found to contain a large amount of child pornography.

The suspect, whose name has not been released because he has not been arrested yet, will be charged with sexual abuse of children, possession of child pornography and criminal use of communication facilities, police said.

The suspect allegedly downloaded the pornography from Eric T. Edwards, 19, a student at the University of North Texas, police said. When authorities searched his computer, the files led them to the Penn State student.

Jeter said the evidence shows the Penn State student was the only person using his computer, and was therefore the only one who could have downloaded the pornography.

According to the Post-Gazette, the investigation began in November when Trooper Robert Erdely, a computer crime expert with the Pennsylvania State Police, found Edwards in an online chat room bragging he had 8,000 photos of child pornography to trade.

The article cited a search warrant affidavit that described one photo of a man with a little girl. Federal agents, according to the affidavit later arrested the man.

Police from the University of North Texas, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General are conducting the investigation, Penn State police said.

Penn State Police Supervisor Clifford Lutz said his department will not be the arresting agency.

"He is not an on-campus student, so we won't be involved in charges," Lutz said. "Filing charges will be handled by the attorney general and the state police. We assisted the other agencies because the student was using a Penn State access account."
