Despite different track, foreign events, men's indoor track team prevails

A different environment, a different track structure and different events, yet the result was the same for the Penn State men's indoor track team Saturday at the Toronto Nike Track Classic in Toronto -- a win.

In a meet where only the University of Toronto fielded athletes in every event and the Lions competed in events they are not used to, Penn State won its third meet in three tries this season.

"There were about forty guys competing in the 60-meters dash," Penn State men's track and field coach Harry Groves said. "Most teams didn't enter with full teams." As a result, Penn State compared scores only with Toronto, and won 96 to 64. For the second meet in a row, the Nittany Lions broke a Penn State record. The 4-by-200-meter relay team featuring Greg Miller, Ernie Terrell, Chris Lolagne and Jaret Campisi came in first with a time of 1:28.89.

Another first place for the Lions came in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:18.55. In the 4x800-meter relay, the Lions also came in first with a time of 7:54.21. Three members of the 4x800-meter relay team, John McGee, Adam Voll and Erin Otterson, were racing together for the first time since their high school days.

Lions co-captain Brian Derby came in first in the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.23 seconds. Second place in event went to Campisi.

Toronto native Matt Lincoln, whose father graduated from the University of Toronto, came first in the 600-meters with a time of 1:20.14. Second was senior Michael Jordan with a time of 1:20.58.

Sophomore Chris Lolagne came in first in the 300-meters race with a time of 35.67 seconds and senior Ian Hahn in the 1,000-meter race with a time of 2:30.03. In the 1,500-meter race, sophomore Tim Walker and junior Chris Pruitt finished first and second, respectively. Walker's winning time was 3:58.77. The Lions' success also continued in the field events. Senior Chavous Nichols won the triple jump one week after he broke the Penn State indoor triple jump record. His leap of 50-5 was enough to secure first place. He also came in first in the long jump with a leap of 28-8. High jump saw Nichols and freshman Tyler Fedeli tied for third with jumps of 6-5 1/2.

Freshman Scott Vernon won the 35-pound weight throw. The Lions also got second-place finishes from pole vaulter Nick Fegley and Dane Miller in the shot put. It was an emotional meet for Lincoln, with relatives and friends from the Toronto track club team present at the meet.
