King would be against affirmative action
I applaud President Bush's stance on the University of Michigan's Affirmative Action policies. The fact of the matter is that Michigan discriminates against white males. I experienced this firsthand. One of my best friends is Native American and decided to apply the week before Michigan's deadline "just to see." She wasn't sure she could get in, because her grades and test scores weren't up to Michigan caliber. In the end, she was accepted, and I was denied even though I applied earlier and had better test scores and GPA. She grew up in practically the same area and environment. There is no doubt in her mind that those 20 points for minority status got her accepted to that university. When I read that University President Spanier believes Martin Luther King, Jr. would agree with affirmative action, ("Penn State President holds chat," Jan. 22 article) I am appalled. Did I miss part of King's speech? Was it "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character (unless it helps them get into college)" ??? Am I, a white male, to be a sacrificial lamb for oppressions against minorities that occurred before I was born? The day that students receive entry to a university based on their merits alone will be the day King's dream will come true. Brian Boehne
