And the new Miss Penn State is ... Carly Hughes.

Hughes (junior-theatre arts) was crowned Miss Penn State 2003 at the fifth annual Miss Penn State Pageant Saturday night.

Hughes' platform was cultural awareness. Her winnings include an $800 scholarship and a yearlong book scholarship.

"I know [winning] is something she definitely wasn't expecting," said Megan Thomas (senior-theatre), a friend of Hughes. "She's such a hard worker, and she deserved to win. I am so proud of her."

Sixteen contestants vied for the title, competing in three categories: a presence and poise competition, in which the women wore evening gowns and were interviewed; a lifestyle and fitness competition, in which contestants wore swimsuits; and an artistic expression competition, in which they showcased their talents. The evening included vocal and instrumental performances as well as African and lyrical dance routines, baton twirling and dramatic readings.

Eisenhower Auditorium was packed with Penn State students there to cheer on their friends.

"It really means a lot to have our peers here to support us," said Autumn Marisa, Miss Pennsylvania 2002, who emceed the event.

The first runner-up was Amy Deatrich (junior-journalism), the second runner-up was Lauren Kenny (junior-communication disorders), the third runner-up was Lindsay McDonald (junior-musical theatre), and the fourth runner-up was Bobbie Jo Solomon (senior-recreation and park management).

"It was a great competition and a great group of girls," Deatrich said. "Anyone who competed could go on to a variety of other [competitions]."

Other awards included the academic award, which went to Jennifer Lynn Driver (junior-communications). Mary Cate Hegarty (sophomore-architectural engineering) won the quality of life award. Mary Kaye Jacono (junior-English and theatre) received the advertising award for selling the most advertisements for the event's program, and Solomon won the spirit of Penn State award.

The Miss Penn State Pageant is a local preliminary to the Miss Pennsylvania and Miss America Scholarship Pageants and is hosted by the Miss Penn State Scholarship Organization.

"It is such a unique program; it offers young women so much with scholarship and service opportunities," said Emily Wills, Miss Penn State 2002.
