Penn State wrestling team welcomes newest member

Collegian Staff Writer

A.J. Cummins, soaked in sweat, is walking out of the David E. Joyner Wrestling Room in the bowels of Rec Hall.

His new teammates and brothers pass by the newest member of the Penn State wrestling family after a grueling practice.

Most of the wrestlers walk by Cummins, a new transfer from West Chester without saying a word.

They are feeling the pains of a hard workout. They look tired and beat.

After Cummins has gone up the steps to the locker room, one of the team's veterans walks out of the room. He looks up, his eyes widening, and smiles.

"It's great," the veteran says of his newest teammate.

The veteran is Cummins' older brother, Ryan.

This is the first time Ryan and A.J., whose full name is Andrew James, have been able to wrestle for the same team.

When I graduated he was still in junior high," the elder Cummins said.

He is looking forward to being on the team with A.J, although he already knows what it is like to wrestle with a brother on his side.

The addition of A. J. to the team means that the wrestling mats at Rec Hall have to put up with the pounding of three Cummins brothers.

Pat, a junior, wrestles for the Lions in the heavyweight division.

The Penn State wrestling family is looking to A.J. to keep up the tradition started by his older brothers.

"He's just like the other two," said assistant coach Dave Hart of the youngest Cummins. "He's going to be a hard worker."

Cummins, a freshman, was on the football team at West Chester before deciding to transfer to Happy Valley.

"I guess it was my love for wrestling and being with my brothers," Cummins said of his decision to change schools.

Cummins was listed at linebacker for West Chester and played in eight games for the Golden Rams this season.

He has not wrestled since last year as a senior in high school.

Cummins will wrestle in the 184-pound class, behind senior Mark Becks and along with junior Curt Thompson and freshman James Yonushonus.

Ryan wrestles in the 197-pound class. He and Pat have combined for a 40-15 record.

The Cummins are just one of four sets of brothers on the team. Juniors Josh and Scott Moore and sophomores Jason and James Woodall are twins.

C.J. and Cliff Wonsettler are also brothers.
