The Penn State wrestling team came away from a busy weekend with two victories, but is yearning for more as it heads into Big Ten competition because of an upset loss to Penn Sunday morning.
While the Nittany Lions cruised to dominating wins against Navy and Drexel they spent yesterday concentrating on a 22-14 loss to the Quakers.
"We lost focus," senior Ryan Cummins said. "But, we'll come back pretty tough this weekend."
Coach Troy Sunderland's team was tied 3-3 going into junior Scott Moore's match against Penn's Doug McGraw. During the match, Penn State lost a point because of unsportsmanlike conduct. Things kept rolling downhill for the Lions as Moore lost the match. Freshman Nathan Galloway was then pinned by the Quakers' Jody Guiricich in the following match.
That set the Lions back 12-2.
"Neither situation is what we want," Sunderland said. As a whole the team was not as sharp as they needed to be, Sunderland said.
Penn State fought back with wins from seniors Doc Vecchio, Mark Becks and Nate Wachter.
Vecchio helped the Lions with bonus points from a major decision, while Becks pulled in extra points for his technical fall Still trailing Penn, the Lions lost their final two matches at the Palestra, when Ryan and Pat Cummins could not pull off victories in the 197-pound and heavyweight divisions.
Because they were still behind Penn, the wrestlers had to work for pins and major decisions instead of being able to concentrate on just wrestling, Sunderland said.
Adam Smith said one of the problems during the Penn match was the approach the Quakers took.
"They edged off the mat," Smith said. "They slowed us down, and got the best of us."
Smith said Big Ten teams wrestle aggressively, which fits more into the Lions style.
"We're pounding each other in the room," he said.
The Lions opened the weekend Friday in Annapolis, Md. where they trounced Navy 32-3.
Nate Wachter, Nathan Galloway, Adam Smith, Doc Vecchio, Mark Becks, Ryan Cummins, Pat Cummins, Dewitt Driscoll and Josh Moore each won their matches against the Midshipmen. This was the 48th time Penn State has beaten Navy in 78 meetings.
The Nittany Lions finished the weekend with 28-6 win against Drexel.
Sunderland sent Vecchio and juniors Marat Tomaev, Scott Moore, Jarrad Turner and sophomore Adam Smith to victories against the Dragons.
Junior Curt Thompson won a major decision in the 184-pound match.
With his two wins this weekend, Becks, 9-0, remained undefeated in duel match competition. He also upped his season record to 28-2.
Vecchio improved his record to 19-11.
Friday the Lions will travel to Bloomington, Ind. for a 7 p.m. match against the Hoosiers. Sunday they will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to meet Purdue at 1 p.m.
"It's more motivation," Sunderland said. "We know where we're at now, especially heading into Big Ten competition.
