They are lifting up their hoods, tugging down their hats and tightening their scarves, as daily highs hover -- like the ghosts of their breath -- in the low 20s.

Funds are rapidly dwindling for student groups hoping to petition the student government for money.

Some people in the Penn State community have been reluctant to accept the results of a recent study suggesting the opposite of what was held to be a medical truth -- that heavy drinking is detrimental to health.

After a few days of classes, some students are searching for ways to make slim college budgets stretch to cover textbook costs.

Penn State faculty, staff and students, as well as members of the State College community, gathered last night to affirm their commitment to continue the advances for which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked in his lifetime.

With four robberies of local businesses within the last month, the State College Police Department is operating under the assumption that at least two of them are connected, Sgt. Dana Leonard said.

There are 44 restaurants in State College that deliver, but there might only be a few that some students actually use.

The $2.5 million grant announced on Dec. 20 by Gov. Mark Schweiker to fund the new Schlow Memorial Library, 100 E. Beaver Ave., was "a welcomed Christmas present," said an unnamed library official.

Travis Myers, 20, of 132 Larkspur Lane, waived his preliminary hearing yesterday at the Centre County Courthouse, Bellefonte. He is charged with animal cruelty from an incident that occurred Jan. 6 when he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend's cat. The cat had to be euthanized.

The Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement held Mad Mex restaurant and bar, 240 S. Pugh St., under suspension last Sunday and Monday for furnishing alcohol to minors and permitting minors to frequent the business.

Troy K. Childers, 22, of 207 Rosa Lane, waived his preliminary hearing yesterday at the Centre County Courthouse, Bellefonte. He is charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespass, aggravated harassment by prisoner and two counts of criminal mischief. The charges stem from a Jan. 8 incident in which Childers allegedly assaulted several police officers.

The No. 13 Penn State women's basketball team will have its first road test in the Big Ten tonight at 7 in Mackey Arena against No. 9 Purdue.

On Thanksgiving Day, Penn State freshman gymnast Luis Vargas was traveling on a plane, but not one bound for his home of Rio Piedros, Puerto Rico. Instead Vargas and Penn State men's gymnastics coach Randy Jepson took a flight to El Salvador, where Vargas competed in the Central American Games.

It's all about hula skirts and late night luaus for the Penn State men's volleyball team this weekend -- well, not exactly.

The following is a breakdown of three Big Ten men's basketball stars.

No. 8 Illinois (12-1, 2-0)

Every college gymnastics team sets its sights on the Super Six, the final four of gymnastics, at the end of the season.

With the Big Ten men's basketball season just underway, no one knows who will win the conference championship.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America recently named Penn State junior midfielder Joanna Lohman (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) NSCAA/adidas College Scholar Athlete of the Year, becoming the first junior to ever win the award. She is also the first Nittany Lion to receive the award.

Art Tragesser, head coach of Penn-Trafford High School in Western Pennsylvania has been named head coach of the 2003 PNC Big 33 Foootball Classic's Pennsylvania team. The head coach of the Ohio team will be Mike Mauk of Kenton High School.

A new breed of videos is coming to Penn State. Starting tonight, the Palmer Museum of Art will present its Come as You Are film series at 7 p.m. Thursdays and at 1 p.m. Sundays in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium.

Part of Penn State's annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, "We Won't Stop Here," will feature a film series entitled, "Eyes on the Prize," which will show on the big-screen television at 11 a.m. today and tomorrow in the HUB-Robeson Center. The series will also be shown at 11 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday.

New Years Resolutions: Every year we seem to break them, but that doesn't stop us from making them anyway. Whether it means quitting smoking, hitting the gym, or staying sober at least a few nights per week, we all have habits we'd like to change. At the beginning of this new year and new semester, Venues asked Penn State students: What's your New Years resolution?

The 45th annual Grammy Awards may still be over a month away, but the whining and complaining have already begun thanks to the presentation of the nominees.

A friend of mine whose brother was later killed in a car accident once lamented an aspect of newspaper coverage: People who are thrust into the spotlight by the tragedies that befall them -- by the glare of ambulance lights and journalists' flashbulbs -- seem to be forgotten too soon after the "news" elements peter out. Sometimes, you'll see an update, maybe a few paragraphs, but it's rare.

Sometimes genres of music can have the misfortune of being pigeonholed to being associated with other activities -- as pogoing is to punk, as moshing is to heavy metal/hardcore, taking ecstasy and other so-called raver drugs is mentioned whenever electronica music is brought up.

The Harlem Globetrotters are teaming up with Burger King for the 2003 Reclaiming the Game world tour. The program will consist of a blend of traditional Globetrotter stunts and skills with more innovative ball handling manuevers and skills.
