Hungry students have helpful site

Collegian Staff Writer

There are 44 restaurants in State College that deliver, but there might only be a few that some students actually use.

This could be because students do not have the phone number, hours, menus or prices for all of these restaurants.

Chris Jeffery (junior-finance), Justin Goldman (junior-letters, arts and sciences) and Jason Kwicien (junior-marketing), members of Sigma Alpha Mu, 425 Locust Lane, have made it possible for students to go to lionmenus.com and find everything about the restaurants that deliver in the area. The Web site offers 44 menus, coupons, phone numbers, hours, prices and postings to hire new employees.

"It is going to open students' eyes to other restaurants that they may not know deliver," Goldman said.

The group got the idea last summer after getting tired of ordering from the same restaurants for two years. They sent an e-mail to the computer science department to see if someone could help them set up a Web site. Stephen Cuppett (senior-computer science and accounting) designed LionMenus.com.

"We hired him, and by the end of the summer, we had our pages designed," Goldman said.

After the Web site was designed, they went to restaurants and asked if they could have takeout menus to advertise on the Web page. Most restaurants did not have money for more advertising and declined.

The men have decided the Spring 2003 semester will be a free trial and hope restaurants will advertise on the site after they see students using it.

"Certainly, any type of publication that puts your menu in it will help. I don't see how it could hurt," said Turtle Patterson, owner and operator of D.P. Dough, 1460 Martin St.

Andy Bardi (junior-English and communications) said he would use the site. "I live off campus and we order out a lot from the same places. The Web site definitely will be convenient."
