Faraway parking spots now have safer lights

A "bright" idea has come to fruition in Parking Lot 83N.

New white lighting has been installed, replacing the dim, yellow glow that created shadows over some parts of the lot. Undergraduate Student Government President Rubina Javeri, who pushed for the improved lighting, said these "hot and cold spots" have been eliminated.

Lot 83N is in a remote area near Park Avenue, across from East Halls.

"We've got a different type of lighting that is more color-correct," said Office of Physical Plant spokesman Paul Ruskin.

The new lights are aimed downward, making them dark-sky compliant, Ruskin said. This reduces light pollution and allows Penn State astronomers to better view the stars, he added.

Javeri, along with university and State College Township officials, previously discussed replacing the lighting with entirely new structures. However, the upgrade would have required traffic islands for the new lights. The parties decided against this option because it would eliminate parking spaces and increase the project's cost.

An official from Penn State's parking office previously said he had been looking into the changes for three years.

Javeri said during her campaign last year she heard many requests from students to improve the lighting in Lot 83N.

"Hopefully, students will feel a lot safer at night," she said.
