Letter to the Editor
Obnoxious canners give Thon a bad name

I would like to respond to the recent letters discussing the competitiveness of Thon. I could not help but get frustrated when reading these letters. Something kept jumping out at me: the repeated references to canning at intersections. Forget about other organizations infringing upon your area; organizations canning at intersections were lucky if the police did not require them to move or even fine them. Canning on street corners is dangerous, against the regulations of Thon and illegal.

As a member of an organization that raises money properly, imagine how frustrating it is for organizations that have permission to can to see another organization at the intersection in front of them, banging on people's windows and standing in front of traffic. Think how annoying it is to repeatedly hear citizens tell you how rude the members of your organization have been to them while they are driving. It is true that some competitiveness drives us to raise more money. This kind of competitiveness, however, hinders everyone's efforts by giving Thon a bad name and irritating people who might have donated money. Next time you are canning you might want to think about following the rules; they're there for a reason.
