Brandin Knight, Julius Page and ... Donatas Zavackas.
With a team full of players that other teams' defenses key on, Zavackas doesn't get a lot of attention. This past Saturday that was obvious as Zavackas scored 20 points on the Penn State men's basketball team as Pittsburgh rolled 82-60.
Zavackas was 4-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc and 6-for-7 on overall field goal attempts. The Big East preseason player of the year, Brandin Knight, was held to only seven points and Zavackas filled his spot nicely.
"Zavackas was the X-factor in the game, he goes unnoticed," Penn State coach Jerry Dunn said. "I think he is the best three [point] guy on the team.
In the second half Zavackas scored three three-pointers in a two minute span. In that time Zavackas had more points than eight Nittany Lions did for the entire game.
It seemed the only time Penn State's defense put a hand in his face he was fouled and that proved to be costly. As he was beyond the arc, he was 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
"The difference was Zavackas," Penn State freshman DeForrest Riley said. "We knew he was going to shoot, it was our fault he was open. We can't have mental breakdowns."
The 6-foot-8 senior played superb defense against the Lions as well. He came down with four rebounds and one block.
He continues the style of being a good shooter that other big European players have, like Dirk Nowitzki who plays in the NBA. The Lithuanian native came to the United States at age 17 to fulfill his dream of playing basketball.
"Zavackas is going to make everything if he is open," Page said. "I think its kind of hard especially for a big man to realize I can shoot," Zavackas said. "I'm just going to hang out a little bit on the three-point line and see if I can get a wide open shot and I think today it worked out perfectly," Zavackas said.
