Wrestlers upset with tourney finish
The team ended up in 3rd place at the Mat Town Classic at Lock Haven University. Many were surprised, but not upset by the low ranking.

Penn State wrestlers were surprised when team results came out at the Mat Town Classic at Lock Haven University.

The team finished third, behind Purdue and Nebraska.

"I'm surprised we didn't place higher," said redshirt freshman DeWitt Driscoll.

Driscoll was one of the most successful Nittany Lions, winning the 141 pound title. Driscoll was not the only member of coach Troy Sunderland's squad to find success on the mat Saturday.

Because the team placed 12 wrestlers, senior Pat Cummins, like Driscoll, expected to come home with a better team result.

"I thought we did a lot better than third," Cummins said. "I wasn't disappointed, it was just strange that we didn't place higher with how well we wrestled."

Cummins, who captured the tournament's heavyweight title, said the tournament would boost the team's confidence because so many wrestlers have started the season off strong.

Along with Cummins and Driscoll, senior Mark Becks and junior Josh Moore brought home tournament titles. All four remain undefeated.

Mat Town had two weight classes, 141 pound and heavyweight, that featured two Lions battling it out for their respective title.

Despite entering the tournament unseeded, Driscoll beat three seeded wrestlers to face off against No. 2 seed and teammate Scott Moore. Driscoll defeated the senior 7-6.

For his efforts Driscoll was named Outstanding Wrestler.

Driscoll credited much of his success to the coaching staff.

"I was in better shape because of our coaches," he said. "They have been pushing us hard, not letting us slow down. They're not holding us back."

Cummins, the No. 1 seed, defeated fellow teammate Josh Walker in the finals. Cummins ran his record to 9-0 with the win over the junior.

Josh Moore won his second straight tournament while improving his record to 10-0. His first title came at the Michigan State Open.

Becks won the 184 pound class beating Nebraska's B.J. Padden.

Senior Ryan Cummins (197 pound), junior Marat Tomaev (133), and freshman Nathan Galloway (149) all placed third for Penn State.

Junior Adam Shepler finished fourth in the 157 pound class while sophomore Adam Smith placed fifth in the 125 pound bracket.

Senior Doc Vecchio also placed for the Lions, coming in sixth in the 165 pound class.

Even with all the personal success at Mat Town, the Lions finished 20 points behind the Boilermakers.

Cummings said the Lions could beat Purdue or Nebraska in a duel meet.

The team will get that chance against the Boilermakers when the two teams meet on Jan. 26.

The Lions will hit the mat next at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Penn State Open at Rec Hall.
