Greeks vote for new leadership

Collegian Staff Writer

Elections for three seats on the Interfraternity Council (IFC) executive board took place at last night's president's council meeting at Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, 319 N. Burrowes Road.

Stephen R. DiOrio (sophomore-communications) defeated current vice president of standards Scott Upright in a bid to serve as IFC president for the spring semester.

In a final speech before the vote, DiOrio stressed his previous experience as president of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, 409 E. Fairmount Ave., and in the IFC as characteristics that will make him a successful president.

He also said his willingness to go "a step beyond" his duties as president will ensure that the greek community succeeds during his tenure.

"I want to make sure the community as a whole not only moves in the right direction, but also thrives," he said.

During a brief question-and-answer session, which followed each candidate's speech, DiOrio said the biggest issue facing the IFC in the upcoming year is its image in the world outside the greek community.

Andy Hackett (junior-computer science/biochemistry and molecular biology) and Jon Stewart (junior-accounting) will serve as IFC executive vice president and vice president of finance respectively for the upcoming year.

Hackett, a former president of Sigma Nu fraternity, 340 N. Burrowes Road, said he hopes the greek community can draw more attention from local media outlets as well as play a greater role at State College Borough Council meetings.

"My biggest goal for the upcoming year is to increase the positive media of the greek system and increase recruitment," he said.

Stewart, a member of Acacia fraternity, 234 Locust Lane, said his goals extended beyond financial matters to include an improved image for the council and better communication between university officials and the greek system.

However, he said, the IFC must not let increased communication lead to a breakdown in the council's self-governance.

East Halls, a major target during greek recruitment, was a topic discussed by nearly all candidates.

Both Hackett and Stewart placed a large amount of emphasis on the area, saying that the annual East Halls mixer should be expanded to include bands, food and other entertainment, in hopes of drawing a larger number of both freshmen and upperclassmen to the event.

Remaining positions on the IFC executive board will be appointed by the new officers and advisers later this semester, after applications for all positions have been reviewed.
