Probe of practices clears fraternity

No sanctions will be imposed on Beta Theta Pi fraternity, 220 N. Burrowes Road, as a result of an investigation launched last month by the fraternity's international chapter.

The investigation was prompted by photographs sent to the fraternity's headquarters via an anonymous e-mail last month.

The photographs, which were also sent to The Daily Collegian and the Office of Student Affairs' division of fraternity and sorority life, show men taking part in alleged hazing activities. They originally appeared on the personal Web site of a Penn State student but were removed shortly after the investigation began.

The pictures include one of a man running naked outside the fraternity house; another shows one man, with his pants pulled down, sitting on a railing on the upper floor of the house and a second person on the first floor below him, with his hands cupped as though he is catching feces.

Michael Kokkinen, spokesman for the international chapter, said the situation was thoroughly examined, and no violations were found to have taken place.

"The photos in and of themselves do not depict hazing in any matter," he said.

The allegations were never formally investigated by the university or the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the governing body for fraternities.

IFC President Max Pipman said the council is confident with the decision the international fraternity made but will continue to monitor the local chapter.

"While acts may not be acceptable ... they are not necessarily a violation of the law or [IFC] constitution," he said. "We don't typically punish stupidity."

Local chapter president Brenden Flood said the chapter would work with alumni to resolve issues within the chapter, including updating the fraternity's internal policies. However, he said, the actions depicted in the photos never occurred.

"There were no incidents involving underage drinking or hazing of any kind," he said.

Flood said he was unaware of any action taken against the student who originally posted the pictures on the Internet.
