The Penn State Ice Lions suffered a roller-coaster weekend that included a win, loss, and a tie which brought the team's overall record to 13-1-2.
The Div. II Lions hosted Stony Brook University this past Friday. It was a very physical game, in which the Lions were outshot 49-35. Despite this disadvantage, Penn State battled the visitors to a 3-3 tie.
On Saturday, New York University visited the Greenberg Ice Pavilion, and suffered a resounding loss at the hands of the host Lions for the second time in one week. The Blue and White outshot NYU 45-41, while lighting the lamp on nine of those 45 attempts. The team only gave up three goals to the visitors.
The Ice Lions then suffered its first defeat yesterday, at the hands of Siena College, 3-2. The Lions were not only outshot 41-30, but also had to face a very strong, defensive Siena team. Pat McCullough scored both goals for the Lions, one in the first period and one with 20 seconds remaining in the game, to bring the Lions within one bounce of the puck. However, the Ice Lions could not put away the equalizer in the seconds.
The team was coming off of four hours of rest heading into that game, and many players believe that played a major role in the defeat.
"We just ran out of gas having played six games in 10 days and this last game coming off of four hours of sleep because of our game on Saturday ending at 1 a.m., driving three hours to [Indiana University of Pennsylvania] and then waking up at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday for our 11 a.m. game," goalie Brian Gratz said.
Assistant captain Dave Jones echoed those thoughts.
"We played really tough, although playing six games in 10 days, we were pretty fatigued."
The Ice Lions will have plenty of rest when they next travel to the Mountain State to face West Virginia University on Dec. 6, and then to IUP to face Montclair State University on Dec. 7.
