Men's soccer to host UNC in second-round matchup

Collegian Staff Writer

The concept isn't too difficult to comprehend.

If you win, you live to see another day. If you lose, your season is over and for some seniors on the Penn State men's soccer team, their soccer careers could be over.

The No. 15 Nittany Lions (14-7) will host the No. 17 North Carolina Tar Heels (14-6-1) tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Jeffrey Field.

Penn State men's soccer coach Barry Gorman said that while he was surprised that his team received a first-round bye, he's extremely happy to be playing at home one last time.

"To get a home game in the NCAA is something special," Gorman said. "You'll have a lot of people from Pennsylvania that will travel in to see a game at Jeffrey Field."

The Lions were given a first-round bye after winning the Big Ten Tournament almost two weeks ago and Gorman didn't seem to mind the long break between games.

"Now we can go over a few technical things, go over a few pointers," Gorman said. "You don't have to do them at a break neck speed."

North Carolina on the other hand went through things the traditional way. After finishing third in the ACC, they were given an at-large bid and a first-round match against first time tournament participant, Winthrop.

The defending National Champion Heels waxed the Eagles this past weekend, 6-0. Five of Carolina's six goals were netted by senior Ryan Kneipper.

Penn State has never lost to the Heels, but then again, the last time the teams played a meaningful game Harry Truman was in office and Perry Como could be seen on the Ed Sullivan Show on a black and white television.

So while this season has been a crazy one for Penn State soccer, a win on the eve of Thanksgiving could make things even crazier for the Lions and their fans.
