Keno, video poker could be inside bars, taverns of State College within months

For The Collegian

From riverboat casinos to keno in bars, gambling might find its way to Pennsylvania within the next several months.

As far as Penn State is concerned, the gambling proposal that would possibly be enacted is for video poker and keno in bars and taverns and some students are excited about the possible new gambling opportunities.

"I would definitely look forward to [gambling]," Matthew Melvin (junior-hotel, restaurant, and institutional management) said. "It would give us something to do."

However, he also said gambling might be troubling in a town of 40,000 college students, since many young adults won't know how to control themselves.

Local businesses would have to decide if they want to partake in gambling if the legislation passes.

Anthony Sapia, owner of Tony's Big Easy, 129 1/2 S. Pugh St., said he hasn't thought much about video poker or keno moving into his establishment. He did say gambling would be another form of entertainment he would explore.

The Saloon, 101 Hiester St. and Champs Sports Bar and Grill, 1611 N. Atherton St. were unavailable to comment.

Pennsylvania residents currently gamble by buying lottery tickets in convenience stores, State College Borough Council member Elizabeth Goreham said. If gambling is legalized statewide, she said she did not know whether the council would be able to control gambling in State College or exactly who would receive the revenue from the casino-related taxes.
