I'm originally from Bethlehem and consider myself a Penn State sports fan. This isn't easy to admit while living among Oklahomans. During the past few months, while keeping track with the Nittany Lions football season, I have been reading the opinion section of your publication, and this is what prompts me to write this letter.
Phillip Krajewski (Nov. 20 letter) is right on with the real meaning of the First Amendment. Since when has a belief in God destroyed your freedom? If you're opposed to the basic tenets of honesty and morality that the statements in the Ten Commandments encompass, then what is your alternative? Perhaps it's just the term "commandments" that's too harsh for you to bear and leads you to conjure up fears of the occasional religious zealot.
I also agree with Kevin Collison (Nov. 21 letter). I do question some of the stories being published as they relate to student issues. Since when do people's opinions that promote responsibility and self-discipline infringe upon those who oppose those values? Are condoms not readily available at the local store that the university restrooms need to supply them for a quick fix? Perhaps the university should provide beer machines since they recognize people will drink anyway.
For the sake of a better society, please think a little deeper before espousing and defending the anything-goes theory.
