Letter to the Editor
Readers weigh in on Heisman buzz, USG vote (3)

In response to the letters on Nov. 18 regarding the Undergraduate Student Government Senate's failed bill to establish a committee in support of Larry Johnson's Heisman Trophy campaign, I have to ask where these people think this initiative will go. The last time I checked, the Downtown Athletic Club did not consider student groups to be a deciding factor in its voting for the Heisman Trophy.

To say that USG is the most pointless organization on campus because of the fate of this legislation, and that its members don't support Penn State athletics, is preposterous. Many USG members are instrumental in the maintenance of our high level of school spirit, both in the stands or through various other organizations, such as Lion Ambassadors.

USG also is very visible in the student community, providing such valuable resources as an apartment guide and housing fair, useful tools to gaining residency off-campus.

I am glad that some senators realized that their time is much better spent working on legislation to improve student life campus-wide rather than to lose focus in trivial legislation that essentially has no point.

I would rather see them continue to work, as they have all year, on worthwhile goals, such as improving student/administration relations, lobbying for an increase in state appropriations, working toward effective diversity in our community and establishing a union for off-campus students.

As for those of you who still think USG serves no purpose here at Penn State, I invite you to rest your pen and quit playing armchair student government and come take an active part in your USG. Inform yourselves, and you'll see how much we do for the students.

Daniel Matos
USG director of town affairs
