Letter to the Editor
Honors simile in article was rude, uncalled for

I was appalled to read Jeff Frantz's Nov. 13 article "Big Ten coaches avoiding Iowa-OSU debate." In what was supposed to be an unbiased, educated news piece, Frantz uses the simile, "Dancing around the issue like the honors college kids in ESACT class" to describe the actions of the Big Ten coaches.

This is an appallingly rude, off-base and slanderous remark that adds nothing to the article itself. I have come to expect this type of writing in The Daily Collegian's opinion columns, but to see it in an article that presupposes to report the news is just depressing.

Mr. Frantz should be informed that the students of the Schreyer Honors College are very active in all forms of athletic endeavors. Honors students are on varsity, club, intramural and recreational teams of all types.

Often, they're afraid to admit that they are academic as well as athletic champions because of the same sort of disrespect and discrimination Mr. Frantz uses in his article.

I'm deeply saddened that I had to defend the students of the Honors College against such a disparaging remark from our very own newspaper.

Hopefully, in the future, the Collegian will make efforts to reduce the off-handed slurs it allows in what it calls "news" and instead try to support these honors athletes who manage to represent Penn State in athletic and academic contexts.
