'Red line'
One of the best lines playing ACHA hockey

Collegian Staff Writer

In the world of hockey, a team's first line is usually filled with superstars. Let's use the Philadelphia Flyers' line of the mid-90s, a.k.a.

"The Legion of Doom," which consisted of John LeClair, Eric Lindros and Mikael Renberg.

This line propelled the Flyers into the playoffs, and eventually to the Stanley Cup Finals.

So does this year's Div. I ACHA Penn State Icers team have that kind of star power on their No. 1 line?

Indeed.

The "Red Line" as it's called by coaches and players, is one of the most dangerous, offensively explosive lines in all of ACHA hockey.

Neal Price, Glenn Zuck and Kevin Jaeger are not only the top three scorers on the Icers, but they are all in the top 10 in scoring in the ACHA.

In the middle stands the eldest statesman, Neal Price.

Price, a 6-foot redshirt senior, is the leader of the line.

While he may not score the most goals or make flashy plays, his role on the team is equally important.

"I think Neal has the right demeanor and is a good mentor," Penn State Icers coach Joe Battista said.

"He is certainly the guy who plays the defensive role on that line and he's the guy who distributes the puck the best.

"I think Glen and Kevin have gotten better at distributing the puck because of Neal's presence."

Flanking Price are the other components of the "Red Line." Glenn Zuck, a 6-2, 200-pound junior and the smaller, but scrappier sophomore Kevin Jaeger have ignited the Icers offense this season, scoring 60 points between the two of them.

Zuck, who led the Icers last season in goals and points with 28 and 64, respectively, is roommates with Jaeger, last season's Icer Rookie of the Year.

Their chemistry is evident not just on paper, but also on the ice.

"Glen and I can joke about anything, even about who has more points in a night," Jaeger said.

"Being good friends just wants to make us play better."

But the friendship doesn't end on the ice between Price and his two linemates, as Zuck and Price double date quite often with their girlfriends.

The one theme that seems to stick with the members of this group is their unselfishness.

Even though they are the team leaders in points, they would all trade in all those points if it meant winning another National Championship.

"Ever since I started playing with Glen and Neal, I was hoping that they'd never break us up," Jaeger said.

"I love playing with those guys and they love to make great plays. We've become so bonded that we just love playing."

While the line is arguably the bes anywhere aroundt the Penn State Icers have ever had, all three members were reluctant to say if it is truly the best line in the ACHA at this time.

Each player admitted that this line is very good, but that there are many good lines out there that they haven't seen yet.

So as the No. 1 Icers try to extend their perfect record to 12-0 this weekend with a two-game home tilt against No. 10 Michigan-Dearborn, one thing is certain: this group will play every shift like it's their last with their sights set on their fourth consecutive National Championship.

And it won't matter who scores the winning goal.
