Allow bicyclists choice of wearing helmet
In regards to Ms. Shonna Days' Nov. 12 column that contemplates the obligatory usage of helmets by bicyclists: I find it mind-numbing the extent to which various people, interest groups and legislators attempt to control our daily lives. Mandating all bicyclists to wear helmets -- that's atrocious. How can the government or local officials tell us that we need to wear a hat to protect our own heads when the only person being affected by some incident is that respective individual? The case can also be made in extreme cases such as abortion, smoking marijuana and suicide (now a defunct crime). We should have a right to choose. Laissez faire, baby, laissez faire. However, this is not as serious as the aforementioned. This is about wearing a helmet on the way to class. If a person feels they are invincible, or they look stupid in a helmet, or even rival the powers of the Man of Steel himself, so be it. Let the individual choose. Maybe, if we are lucky, you will see me amble down the street to fetch the paper -- with a helmet and pillows strapped to my head because the government told me to. I guess that would be an ideal world, huh? John Murphy
