Lines such as " ... you'll be sorry that you messed with/The U.S. of A./'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass/It's the American way" caused Peter Jennings to take back ABC's invitation for Keith to play on its Fourth of July special. Keith has, however, appeared on many other shows since then, including The Dukes of Hazzard reunion and Touched By An Angel.
Keith played at this year's Farm Aid concert near Pittsburgh, a daylong concert that benefited family farms. Julie Hotkowski (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) attended the show.
"His show had so much energy," she said. "It was clear he loves what he does and really puts his heart into performing."
Keith has admitted that he has been looked down upon in the country music industry for releasing "The Angry American," but he didn't record that song for them.
In an interview with John Hayes of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, he told Hayes that he wrote the song for the men and women in the military.
"Toby Keith is hot right now with all age groups," said Bernie Punt, director of sales and marketing for the Bryce Jordan Center.
Punt said only 26 percent of ticket sales were generated in the Centre County area and PSU students purchased less than 300 of the tickets for sale. Most of the other tickets purchased were from Harrisburg and Altoona.
"We hope to have another country concert confirmed the night of Toby Keith. It will be a big surprise for everyone in attendance," Punt said.
Opening for Keith is the trio Rascal Flatts. The band won the Horizon Award at the Country Music Association Awards the very same day its album "Melt" debuted at No. 1 on the country charts.
"I just got their new CD, and it's pretty good," Tim Walsh (freshman-international politics) said. "I think I'm going to check out the show on Saturday."
There are a limited amount of single tickets available for the concert. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Bryce Jordan ticket window or charged by calling 865-5555.
