Feminist literary magazine starts at PSU

FOR THE COLLEGIAN

This spring, Penn State's Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA) will give feminists a chance to roar.

FMLA is collecting original feminist poems, essays and artwork to be published in The Lioness, the club's new literary magazine, which is slated for distribution next semester.

FMLA members Darn Leto (sophomore-science) and Jason Leto (senior-history) decided to start the project when their friend showed them a similar type of magazine from the University of Illinois.

"I thought it would be a really good idea because we don't have anything like that here," Dara Leto said.

She said the purpose of the magazine is to heighten the awareness of women's issues on campus in a different forum than is currently available.

Dara hopes the magazine will bring about a more realistic view of women on campus.

Penn State has several clubs that address women's issues, as well as a strong women's studies program, which offers about 75 undergraduate courses.

Some students feel that the emphasis on Penn State women is strong enough already.

"I don't think The Lioness is a good idea at all. There is no literary magazine portraying only male viewpoints, why should they have one for women?" said Chris Hall (freshman-golf management).

Darn Leto said the magazine is not restricted to female views.

Kristina Amodei (junior-secondary education) heard about the magazine in one of her classes.

She submitted a poem earlier this semester.

"I've always been into women's issues and I think the magazine is good because it will give a female perspective to a lot of things," Amodei said.

The club hopes to distribute about 1,500 free copies of The Lioness this spring.

FMLA will accept submissions for the magazine until the end of the semester. Those wishing to submit work can email Darn Leto at del181@psu.edu or Jason Leto at jml321@psu.edu.

Meetings for the magazine take place at 8:45 p.m. on Mondays in 120 Boucke. They are open to all who are interested.
